Planning Your Whitehorse Road Trip - Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a self-drive vacation from Whitehorse offers the opportunity to explore the Yukon and Alaska by road, including some of the region's most scenic and remote highways. Here you'll find practical answers about rental cars, gravel highways, border crossings, ferry travel and what to expect when traveling through the Yukon and Alaska by car.

Where can I pick up my rental car in Whitehorse?

Rental cars for our Whitehorse road trips are available at Whitehorse International Airport. This is convenient whether you are flying into Whitehorse to begin your road trip or arriving from another destination in Canada. Your individual itinerary and booking confirmation will provide the exact rental car pick-up location and time.

Are rental cars included in your Whitehorse road trips?

Yes. Our Whitehorse self-drive tour packages include a rental car for the driving portion of the itinerary. Rental periods, vehicle categories and pick-up and return locations vary depending on the tour. The exact rental car arrangements are shown in the individual itinerary and booking confirmation.

What type of rental car will I receive?

A mid-size car is included with our Whitehorse driving tours. If you prefer more space or a different type of vehicle, you can upgrade to a larger vehicle, subject to availability and an additional cost. Rental car companies guarantee a vehicle category rather than a specific make or model.

Are gravel roads and highways allowed with the rental car?

Yes. Unlike most rental cars in Alaska, the rental cars used for our Whitehorse driving tours allow travel on the gravel roads and highways specifically included in the itinerary. This makes it possible to explore some of the more remote and scenic areas of the Yukon and Alaska by rental car. The permitted roads and highways are specified for each individual itinerary and are covered under the applicable rental agreement.

What vehicles can I take on the Dempster Highway?

You can take all wheel drive vehicles to Tombstone National Park and 4x4 vehicles on the entire Dempster highway. Mid-size SUVs and up. Traveling the Dempster Highway requires written approval.

Am I allowed to take my rental car across the U.S./Canada border?

Yes, absolutely. Our rental cars can be driven across the U.S./Canada border. This makes it possible to combine Yukon and Alaska on the same self-drive vacation. Please make sure you have the required travel documents for entering the United States or Canada.

Can I take my rental car on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry?

Yes. Rental cars can be transported on the Alaska Marine Highway ferries. This can be a convenient way to combine a Yukon and Alaska road trip with ferry travel between coastal communities that are not connected by road. Ferry reservations for both the passenger and rental vehicle are required in advance, and vehicle space is subject to availability.

Can I take a one-way road trip from Whitehorse?

Yes. One-way rental car travel is available from Whitehorse to selected destinations, including Inuvik, Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg. This allows you to finish your road trip in another city rather than returning to Whitehorse and is especially useful for longer Yukon and Canada itineraries. One-way rentals must be arranged in advance and are subject to applicable one-way fees.

Can I customize a Whitehorse road trip?

Yes. Our Whitehorse driving tours can be customized with additional hotel nights and optional activities, subject to availability. Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to extend your stay in Whitehorse, Dawson City or other destinations, or add additional sightseeing and excursions to your road trip.

What is included in a Whitehorse driving tour?

Our Whitehorse driving tours combine your rental car with pre-arranged accommodations and a detailed itinerary for your journey. Depending on the selected tour, sightseeing activities, ferry transportation or other experiences may also be included. Each tour page lists the exact inclusions for that itinerary, so you can easily see what is already arranged before you travel. Flights from your home country or city to Whitehorse are not included.
