Why Visit Denali National Park?
Denali is not a typical national park with a network of roads connecting attractions. It is a vast wilderness, and the experience is about open landscapes and nature on a grand scale.
🏞️ Alaska Range scenery
Rugged mountains, glaciers, river valleys, and alpine tundra.
⛰️ Denali itself
On clear days the mountain dominates the skyline, but it is often hidden by cloud.
🌌 A sense of wilderness
Relatively undeveloped, and one of Alaska's most memorable places.
Background
History of Denali National Park
1917
The park was established as Mount McKinley National Park, originally to protect Dall sheep and their habitat. Its boundaries and purpose expanded over the years.
2015
The mountain's official name was changed from Mount McKinley to Denali, reflecting its longstanding Indigenous name.
The name comes from the Koyukon Athabascan language and is commonly translated as "the high one". The mountain has long held cultural significance for Alaska Native peoples.
Experiences
Things to Do in Denali National Park
🚌
Wildlife viewing by bus
A park bus excursion is the classic way to experience Denali, with changing views of forest, tundra, mountains, and river valleys. Some excursions include narration, while others focus on transportation.
🥾
Hiking and nature walks
Marked trails near the park entrance suit most visitors, and guided walks help explain the landscape and plants. Beyond the developed trails, the backcountry is largely trail-less and needs careful preparation.
ℹ️
Denali Visitor Center
A useful starting point for the park's wildlife, geology, history, and conservation, with exhibits, ranger information, and interpretive programs.
🐕
Sled dog demonstrations
Seasonal demonstrations show how Denali's sled dogs work in the park and the history of dog sledding in Alaska.
🛶
River rafting
Guided trips range from scenic floats to whitewater, depending on the operator and conditions. Tours run seasonally, and waterproof clothing is recommended.
✈️ From above
Flightseeing Tours over Denali
A scenic flight shows the scale of the mountains, glaciers, and deep valleys that are hard to appreciate from the ground. Some operators offer glacier landings, weather permitting.
Tip: Flights depend on mountain weather and can be delayed or cancelled. Schedule yours early in your stay so there is another chance if the weather does not cooperate.
Wildlife
Wildlife in Denali
Animals roam freely across the landscape and sightings are never guaranteed, but the park offers some of Alaska's best wildlife viewing.
🐻 Grizzly bears
Often seen foraging on open tundra and hillsides.
🫎 Moose
May be spotted near willow thickets and wetlands.
🦌 Caribou
Travel across the tundra in search of food.
🐏 Dall sheep
Sometimes visible on steep, rocky slopes.
🐺 Wolves and foxes
More elusive, but part of the park's ecosystem.
🦅 Birdlife
Migratory birds and birds of prey visit in season.
Please note: Always observe wildlife from a safe distance, never approach or feed animals, and follow park guidance.
Where to base yourself
Denali Park and Healy: What's the Difference?
📍
Denali Park
Closest to the park entrance and visitor facilities. Many hotels, lodges, restaurants, and tour operators line the highway here, making it a convenient base for park excursions.
🏘️
Healy
A small community north of the park entrance, originally a coal-mining town and now a service centre with accommodation, restaurants, shops, and tour operators. A practical alternative for travellers with a rental car.
Accommodation ranges from full-service hotels and lodges to cabins and campgrounds, and many properties are seasonal. When comparing hotels, check the exact location and transport arrangements, because staying farther from the entrance can mean a longer transfer to your excursion.
Book early: In the main summer season, lodging can sell out well in advance, especially if you have fixed dates for a railroad journey, park excursion, or flightseeing tour.
Where to Eat in Denali
Restaurants around the park entrance and in Healy are mostly seasonal, and hours vary, especially in May and September. Inside the park, food service is limited, so bring water and snacks for a long bus trip.
🍺
49th State Brewing
A brewpub in Healy, popular for local beer and hearty food after a day outdoors.
🍕
Prospector's Pizzeria & Ale House
Pizza and local beers close to the park entrance.
☕
Black Bear Coffee House
A coffee house near the entrance, handy for an early start before an excursion.
Travel
Getting to Denali National Park
Denali lies along the George Parks Highway between Anchorage and Fairbanks. It is a popular stop on Alaska road trips and is also served by the Alaska Railroad in summer.
🚗
By car
Gives you freedom to stop at viewpoints. It is about 237 miles from Anchorage and about 120 miles from Fairbanks, though journey times depend on traffic, weather, and stops.
🚂
By Alaska Railroad
The Denali Star route connects Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali, and Fairbanks in the summer season. Check the current timetable when planning your trip.
🚐
By motorcoach or tour package
Scheduled motorcoach services and organised packages are useful if you prefer not to drive or want to combine the park with rail travel.
Getting Around Denali
Private vehicles can drive only a short way along the Denali Park Road, so bus services are the main way to travel deeper into the park when they are operating. Choose your excursion in advance and check the current National Park Service guidance for your dates.
If you arrive by train or motorcoach, check whether your hotel offers transfers. Lodges, restaurants, and tour departure points are not always within walking distance.

Often not. The mountain is frequently hidden by cloud, so clear views are never guaranteed. Enjoy the surrounding landscape even if the summit is hidden.
